HISTORY

Founded in March 20, 1949, the university's aim is to educate the Korean minority in Northeast China.

It is the only university in China that employs Korean as well as Chinese as official languages.

Yanbian is a local comprehensive university with national characteristics and a key university in Jilin Province, under the lead of the National Education Policy. In 1996, it was included in the State Department’s "211 Project", qualifying as one of the one hundred universities that will receive major investments. Yanbian University was approved by the State Ministry of Education as the key constructive university under the policy of Western Development in 2001, and as a key university, which would be co-developed by both, the State Ministry of Education and Jilin Province, in 2005 Now, Yanbian University consists of 19 colleges, which offer 68 programs for Bachelor degree, 78 programs for master degree, and 8 programs for doctor degree. Apart from the above, there are 8 research institutes attached to our university, such as the North-east Asia Research Institute, the Research Institute of Eastern Culture, the Research Institute of Protection and Exploitation of ChangBai Mountain's Natural Resources, and the Research Institute of Ethnical Issue, among others. It also includes 41 scientific research institutes combined with departments, such as the Research Institute of TuMen River Exploitation, the Relation History of China, DPRK, ROK and Japan etc., 5 research institutes of science and technology, such as the Research Center of Comparative Literature of China, DPRK, ROK and Japan, and the Research Institute of Yanbian Microbe etc., and 4 research institutes of national academic society, such as the Research Institute of Chinese and Japanese Philosophy, and the Research Institute of the Ethnic Korean History of China, etc.

Yanbian University has also developed basic research centres in the areas of humanities and social science, directly under Ministry of Education and Jilin Province, such as the Research Base of Comparative Literature of China, DPRK, ROK and Japan, Chinese Education Base for Overseas Chinese entrusted by the State Council the national key university of overseas Chinese education as a second language, the North-east Asia Research Base of Philosophy and Social Science of Jilin Province, ChangBai Mountain's Natural Resources & functional molecule lab, which was co-constructed by both of the State Ministry of Education and Jilin Province.

After foundation, Yanbian University has trained over 75,000 graduates of different fields that work all over the country, and has become the backbone of their companies and institutions where they work. Within the past 50 years, the development of the structure of the curriculum of Yanbian University has been improved reasonably, along with the great upscale of teaching facilities. Yanbian University is poised to become a first-rate local comprehensive university, which has a certain influence both in home and abroad with active international education and academic exchange activities.

There are over 560 overseas students mainly from 9 different countries, such as Japan, Russia, South Korea, etc., carrying on their language learning, bachelor, Master, and Doctoral courses. The rate of overseas students from South Korea (ROK) is over 70%, so Yanbian University is an ideal place for the overseas students from South Korea to live and study.

PROGRAMS

The university offers eleven programs of Economics, Philosophy, Law, Pedagogy, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management, etc. It consists of 12 colleges, which offer 63 programs for Bachelor's degree, 48 programs for the master's degree, 4 programs for the doctor's degree.

FACULTIES

In 2004, the student body amounted to 16,413 students, including 10,599 undergraduates, 712 postgraduates, 44 doctoral candidates, 384 foreign students and 4,674 adult students. Most foreign students come from South Korea, Japan, the United States, and Russia. The faculty comprises 1462 full-time teachers of whom 156 are professors, and 396 are associate professors.
